“Eternal Rest Stops”

The road is short,
But the battle can be long,
And there are signs
For eternal rest stops
Everywhere.

Bumper to bumper traffic—
All of us,
Stuck,
Heading towards our final destinations.
Most relate, all in the same way.

But different are the ones who are tired;
Different are the ones who need a rest;
Different are the ones who pull over at the next rest stop.

Different from the ones who run out of gas.
Different from the ones whose tires fall off.

The road is short,
But our engines can strain,
And there are bumps
That do more damage than most may think.

They shake me too much,
And I don't think I want to continue any longer.
