“People are Forgetful”

Throughout high school
Brian Butts was an outcast.
His piers made fun of his name
And his look.
He was ashamed of his glasses—
Thickly framed;
He was ashamed of his nose—
Hooked.
His piers made fun of his voice—
Squeaky,
It shook.
Brian Butts was the target of much cruelty.
And he took every bit of that cruelty
Dead-on-center.
He lived his life in embarrassment.
Well, until on day in senior year…

Fear rose in the people
When Brian Butts came to school that day
Crazed,
And with military gear.

Leftover students and staff couldn’t laugh for weeks,
And making fun of another student wasn’t even a thought.
But for only one year
Did another students embarrassment
From a fellow student
Not get sought.

People are forgetful.
